Camp Boggy Creek Sickle Cell Campers Featured in 7 News Miami

Camp is thrilled to share some uplifting news from July 31, 2025: a group of young patients living with sickle cell disease were treated to a very special send-off at Broward Health Medical Center before making their way to our camp in Orlando WSVN 7News+1.

These courageous children and teens from Broward Health, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital spent a bright, joyous morning together. They enjoyed a delicious breakfast, picked up any medications they needed, and were cheered on as they prepared for an unforgettable week at Boggy Creek.

Shane Strum, President and CEO of Broward Health, beautifully captured the spirit of the experience: “It gives them an opportunity to be with other children with sickle cell ... build their confidence, learn more about what’s going on with friends or others that might have a disease like this.”

Camper, Jayla, shared her excitement, saying, “Once you get the hang of it, it’s actually fun. The counselors are nice, the nurses are nice, the camp directors are nice. You have activities to do like archery, swimming, horseback riding, boating and fishing, and more stuff, arts and crafts.”

At Camp, we’re honored to provide a safe, medically supported environment where children with serious illnesses, like sickle cell disease, can just be themselves laughing, exploring, and growing alongside new friends. Thank you to Broward Health and all our partners for making this special moment, and week, possible.
