The 8-Year-Old Explorer

Who Makes Camp Feel Like Home

Meet Matthew: He Didn’t Just Find the Magic—He Spreads It

With just eight years old, Mathew lives with Tetralogy of Fallot, a complex heart condition he's battled since the moment he was born, undergoing open-heart surgery at just three weeks old.

But that battle, fought so early in life, has only amplified his joy and curiosity. With a big smile and his signature baseball cap, Mathew is an endless explorer, always the first to ask the big questions: “How do the boats float?” or “Where do the frogs go at night?” Our counselors start their day ready for his morning curiosity, delivered with wide-eyed excitement before breakfast.

The Most Important Job at Camp

Mathew's gift, however, is his empathy. He transforms his own journey of bravery into a universal welcome for everyone he meets.

Camp can be intimidating, especially for kids dealing with serious illnesses. When a new camper arrives feeling nervous or alone, Mathew is there. He’s the first to offer the grand tour, share his favorite traditions, and give important tips—like where to sit in the dining hall to be first in line for dessert.

He remembers his first day, too. “I was scared, my first time,” he tells them. “But wait until you see the talent show—you’ll forget you were ever nervous!”

Mathew doesn’t just show new kids the ropes; he shows them they belong. Whether he’s leading a group to arts and crafts or waving hello to the medical staff at the pool, Mathew makes camp feel like home for everyone. His greatest joy is seeing a nervous camper’s frown turn into a smile.

A Place to Just Be a Kid

Camp Boggy Creek is a medically safe place where Mathew is simply Mathew—a brave and curious leader who wears his favorite color, red, every single day. He isn't defined by his heart condition; he's defined by the friends he makes and the joy he spreads.
