12-2-2011 Hope and Healing

When he was only a few weeks old, Cory Blackwood was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia. His treatment included medications for pain and also for prevention of infections, lung damage, and strokes. However, now 16 years old and after what many consider a miracle, Cory has been cured after receiving a bone marrow transplant, donated by his younger sister, Mia.

8-30-2011 Leaders in Training / campers in transition

For any child, turning 16 years old is a rite of passage with many privileges and responsibilities. At Camp Boggy Creek it is also a little bittersweet for campers as they cope with the knowledge that they have reached the maximum age to attend summer camp and family retreat programs. For many, though, a new adventure is about to begin. Since 1999, more than 200 campers have returned to their “Home Away From Home” to participate in Camp Boggy Creek’s Leaders in Training / campers in transition (LIT/cit) program.

6-28-2011 A Home with Heart

During a routine ultrasound, expecting parents Donna and Tim learned that their unborn son, Jonathon, might have some problems with his heart. More tests confirmed that pulmonary veins were bringing blood from his little lungs to the right side of his heart, rather than to the left as in a normal heart. Their bundle of joy arrived in September 2002 and, with expert medical care all along the way, Jonathan has continued to thrive.

5-26-2011 Home Away From Home

If you listen very carefully, you can hear them…hundreds of seriously ill children from Pensacola to Miami are packing their bags and anxiously counting the days until they arrive at Camp Boggy Creek for a week of fun and a lifetime of memories. The Camp will welcome children in over 13 different illness groups beginning on June 11. For many it will be their first time away from home, but Boggy Creek will quickly become (and always remain) their Home Away From Home.
