CAMP BOGGY CREEK CELEBRATES 20TH ANNIVERSARY AND “THE JOY OF YES”
Camp for children with serious illnesses surpasses 70 thousand served
EUSTIS, FLA. – Jan. 6, 2016 – Camp Boggy Creek enters its 20th year providing lifelong memories and friendships for children diagnosed with serious medical conditions by celebrating The Joy of Yes. The Camp opened two decades ago as a place where kids, who too often hear the word no because of their medical conditions, finally get to experience the joy of hearing yes to any number of camp adventures.
Yes, to riding a horse; yes, to climbing a rock wall and zip lining down; yes, to cannonballs in the deep end; yes, to reeling in a fish and kissing it for good luck. The possibilities are endless at Camp Boggy Creek and so is the confidence children build when friendship, reassurance and hope are needed most in their lives.
The Joy of Yes is the theme for Camp Boggy Creek’s 20th anniversary year, which includes week long summer sessions, family retreat weekends year-round, and special events to raise awareness and funds. Camp has served more than 70 thousand children with serious illnesses and family members over the last two decades and this year’s events and outreach will help to ensure another 20 years of success through empowering activities.
“This milestone reminds us of the vision and dedication of our founders to create a place where children with serious illnesses could forget about their medical challenges and enjoy the empowering spirit and fellowship found at camp,” said June Clark, Camp Boggy Creek president and CEO. “The children have been our inspiration for 20 years and they fuel our unwavering commitment.”
Camp is a member of the SeriousFun Children’s Network, founded by actor and philanthropist Paul Newman. Along with General H. Norman Schwarzkopf and a dedicated group of community and business leaders, Newman founded Camp Boggy Creek in 1996 to foster a spirit of joy by creating a free, safe and medically equipped camp environment. The experience includes unobtrusive expert medical care from doctors and nurses who volunteer their talents to make sure all children can participate.
Camp Boggy Creek serves children ages 7 to 16 with illnesses including cancer, heart disease, hemophilia, arthritis, sickle cell, spina bifida, epilepsy and several other disorders. Programs are offered year-round and families are never charged to participate. Operating Camp as a U.S. 501(c) (3) tax-exempt organization requires a devoted staff; more than 2,000 volunteers who contribute over 100,000 hours annually; and an annual budget of almost $5 million funded by donations from individuals, corporations, foundations and healthcare partners.
