1. Who are the campers?
Camp Boggy Creek accepts children ages 7-16 that have been diagnosed with life threatening illnesses such as cancer, sickle cell anemia, and epilepsy. Many children are still under active treatment, while others are in remission. Sessions are divided among 13 different illness groups. Summer Camp allows the camper to experience camp for one week in a medically safe environment, while Family Weekends allow the camper's entire family the chance to enjoy camp for a weekend.
2. Who are the Volunteers?
We accept volunteers from all walks of life who are from all over the USA and the world. Students, professionals, husbands and wives ages 19 to 90 years are welcome to apply. We also encourage groups to volunteer with us. These events offer great opportunities for team building, college credit and service hours.
3. How can I help?
You may volunteer during our Family Weekends as a Family Pal, Activity Pal, Certified Lifeguard, Support Group Facilitator or Dining Hall Assistant. During our Summer Camps you may volunteer as a Cabin Counselor, Equestrian Assistant or Dining Hall Assistant. Generally, there are 25 male volunteers and 25 female volunteers needed for each session. Volunteers participate in the full range of camp activities, assisting our campers in reaching the main goal....having FUN! (NOTE: Female Counselor spots fill quickly; however, we are in need of MALE volunteers during Summer Camp and Certified Lifeguards during our Family Weekends)
4. Where will I stay?
All Family Weekend Volunteers will stay in one of two air-conditioned Staff Lodges while the families stay in the cabins with the campers. As a Summer Cabin Counselor, you will live in one of our 16 duplex cabins adjoining 8-10 campers and 2 full-time summer staff. All other volunteers stay in the Staff Lodges. Medical volunteers will stay in the Medical Duplex. Food and lodging is provided free of charge to our campers, their families and our volunteers.
5. What time do I need to be there on arrival day and when do I leave on departure day?
You will need to arrive at camp by 2 pm on Volunteer Arrival Day of your selected session. (Check Volunteer Calendar of Events for arrival dates) This will enable you to settle into your cabin and meet at the Theater by 3 pm for the Mandatory Volunteer Orientation (approximately 2.5 hours). Departure Day is usually between 1 pm and 2 pm on the last day of your session. (Check Volunteer Calendar for dates) Family Weekend and Summer Camp volunteers must commit to the entire session they have chosen.
6. Do I have to attend the Orientation?
YES! Each volunteer must take part in an intensive training session prior to the camper’s arrival. Orientation is your toolbox for the week. You will be at a great disadvantage without it. We discuss the schedule of activities for the week or weekend, review camp policies and procedures and present a general medical overview of the session illness. You will also take a tour of camp and receive other important information regarding your volunteer role with our campers.
7. Do you provide transportation to camp?
You will need to provide your own transportation to camp. However, if you fly in or travel by bus or train, we will provide limited shuttle service to camp from local airports, bus and train terminals. Plan to fly into Orlando International Airport by 12 noon of your scheduled arrival day and depart after 5pm on departure day. We are located one hour from the airport and will make one trip each way. Bus and Train arrivals should be scheduled to arrive in Deland by 1pm on arrival and depart after 3 pm on departure day.
8. What do I need to bring?
Once you have completed the application process, you will receive an Acceptance Packet in the mail. There will be packing tips, a map to the camp, a mock schedule of the weeks or weekends activities, and a manual during summer months that will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about Camp Boggy Creek. (* Bring an alarm clock as we start each day at 7am! )
9. May I volunteer for more than one session?
YES! You may volunteer for up to two sessions. An evaluation will be made after the second session if additional sessions are desired. Once you have completed the volunteer application process your name will be added to our volunteer database and you will receive a seasonal Return Volunteer Update form in the mail. Simply complete and return this form to us to volunteer again and to help keep our database current. Background Checks, Medical TB test and physical must be renewed every two years.
10. When do I submit my application?
You should complete the application, including the two page Background Check ASAP. After we have received the completed application, you will be contacted to participate in a telephone interview. You will be accepted once your background check clears, your Medical Form with TB test has been turned in along with your Service Agreement and three personal reference emails are contacted. This process typically takes 4 to 5 weeks. If you are interested in a particular session, you should submit your application at least 6 weeks prior to the session. Groups need to contact the Volunteer Coordinator for special instructions. We do have waiting lists for all sessions that are full.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us!
