Camp Boggy Creek Honors Volunteers with PRESIDENT’S VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD Camp Boggy Creek, Florida’s camp for seriously ill children, today announced it has recognized 14 individual volunteers and one volunteer group with the President’s Volunteer Service Award, a national honor offered in recognition of volunteer service. Two Central Florida residents were among those recognized. They include: - Bill Vessier, 50, Orlando, received a Lifetime Award. Formerly a Respiratory Therapist, Bill is a year round volunteer at CBC and contributes with fundraising and special events. - David Weinstein, 23, currently a medical student at Brown University, received a Gold Award. Originally from Maitland, Weinstein first attended camp in 2003 and has volunteered over 1,000 hours. He says, “I am applying for medical school in the fall, and couldn’t think of a better way to spend the summer, then giving myself to these children.” Established in 2003, the award is bestowed on an annual basis to individuals, groups and families who have met or exceeded requirements for volunteer service and have demonstrated exemplary citizenship through volunteering. As one of hundreds of Certifying Organizations participating in the award program, Camp Boggy Creek confers the award to recognize the outstanding achievements of its volunteers. In his 2002 State of the Union Address, President George W. Bush created the USA Freedom Corps, and called on every American to make a lifelong commitment to volunteer service. The President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes individuals and families who have answered that call. The award is issued by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, a group created by President Bush to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers are making to our Nation. Camp Boggy Creek is a year-round camp for children ages 7-16 who have chronic or life threatening illnesses. The camp, located on 232 acres in Eustis, Fla, allows children whose lives have been a series of medical procedures and hospital stays to enjoy summer camp as just a “kid.” There is no charge to attend camp. Camp Boggy Creek is solely supported by contributions and donations from individuals, corporations and foundations. Camp Boggy Creek is in urgent need of volunteers for its upcoming summer session. Volunteers must be at least 19 years of age and be willing to spend a week at the residential camp. Background checks are required. The main job of the camp counselor is to play with kids and enjoy the volunteer experience of a lifetime! Volunteer applications can be requested online at http://www.BoggyCreek.org by clicking on the “Summer Volunteers Urgently Needed” link or by calling Robin Brubaker at 866-Go-Boggy ext. 293. A complete summer schedule of camp sessions is available on the Camp Boggy Creek website. For more information about the President’s Volunteer Service Award, visit www.PresidentialServiceAwards.gov.
