1,028 Seriously Ill Children Spent Summer At Camp

With school back in session and the summer break officially over, more than 1,000 of Florida’s seriously ill children can say they made the most of their vacation time at Camp Boggy Creek.

Camp Boggy Creek, Florida’s camp for seriously ill children, welcomed 1,028 children ages 7-16 during the summer. Children living with cancer, hemophilia, arthritis, asthma, immunology, heart and lung disease, sickle cell, kidney and irritable bowel disease, and spina bifida attended week-long summer camp sessions from June through August.

A total of 320 volunteers, including 28 doctors, 41 nurses and 18 trained medical support staff, helped to make the children’s summer unforgettable.

“We are thankful for these special children and for the hundreds of dedicated volunteers from all walks of life that gave a week or more of their summer to help give these kids the best week of their young lives,” said Boggy Creek President Roger Murtie.

Camp Boggy Creek is a year-round camp for children ages 7-16 who have chronic or life threatening illnesses. The camp, located on 232 acres in Eustis, Fla, allows children whose lives are a series of medical procedures and hospital stays to enjoy summer camp as just a “kid.” Between early morning swims and evening campfires, children have a chance to enjoy the summer camp experience with others coping with the same illness or condition and realize that they are not alone. There is no charge to attend camp. Camp Boggy Creek is solely supported by contributions and donations from individuals, corporations and foundations. Camp Boggy Creek is in serious need of volunteers for Fall Family Weekends. Volunteers must be at least 19 years of age and be willing to spend a weekend at the residential camp. Background checks are required. The main job of the camp counselor is to play with kids and enjoy the volunteer experience of a lifetime! Certified lifeguards are a critical need for Saturdays this fall. Volunteer applications can be requested online at http://www.BoggyCreek.org or by calling Robin Brubaker at 866-Go-Boggy ext. 293.
