Jared's Journey ~ A Camper's Story ![]() Every summer, Camp Boggy Creek welcomes hundreds of Florida's most seriously ill children and begins their journey to discover love, hope and friendship. One camper's journey began this spring when he was diagnosed with synovial cell sarcoma and his journey, like so many others, will continue, but his spirit has been renewed because of his time at Camp Boggy Creek. Jared is a 14-year old boy who enjoys the same activities and hobbies that most boys his age do, but when he discovered a growth on his leg this past Spring, his life and everything he knew changed. His pediatrician confirmed that the tumor was cancerous and that he would need to begin chemotherapy treatments immediately. Jared could never have imagined that his journey would begin with his diagnosis and then take him to a summer camp, especially a camp specifically developed for children experiencing a similar illness. Jared arrived for his first day of camp during the Cancer session on Wednesday, July 8. His transformation from a sick child to normal camper began immediately as he participated in all the activities including his favorites: fishing, arts & crafts, hands-free spaghetti night and the dance. The friendships that Jared made with other children just like him were unexpected gifts yet most welcome and will continue well beyond his time at camp. Another special gift that truly touched Jared's heart was receiving his very own Boggy Bear and afghan blanket. He planned to take his Boggy Bear with him to the hospital for upcoming surgery to remove the tumor. He knew the Bear would remind him of the wonderful friends he made and experiences he had (and hopes to have again). When Jared packed his belongings to prepare to go home, unfortunately, he forgot to pack his bear and blanket. Jared's Mom, Nicole, called to share his story in hopes of finding his lost bear (or replacement bear) in time for his surgery and added, "Jared blazed his own trail at Camp Boggy Creek ~ it was truly a blessing for him and our family." Of course, a Boggy Bear and blanket were mailed immediately! The lasting effects of Camp Boggy Creek's programs are made possible through the generous contributions of countless supporters including the talented and caring friends who donate time and resources to create Boggy Bears, afghan blankets, and quilts. The Boggy Bears and blankets remind our campers and their families to continue Believing in their Journey and to know that the spirit of camp is always with them. |
