Camp Boggy Creek Celebrates 10 Years of Serving Seriously Ill Children Camp Boggy Creek, a proud charity of Grand American Road Racing, will be celebrating its 10th anniversary throughout 2006. The year long celebration will include an Open House, special events, birthday parties for campers each week during summer camp and the launch of a new and expanded website in February. Since its opening in June 1996, Camp Boggy Creek has served over 28,000 seriously ill children and their families with the help of a core group of 5,500 faithful volunteers and the generous support of corporations, foundations and thousands of individuals each year. Again in the 2006 season, any fines levied by Grand Am will go to support the camp. Additionally, countless team owners, drivers, team members and sponsors have joined the effort by helping to raise funds and increase awareness of the camp and its mission. Camp Boggy Creek is a year-round camp for children ages 7-16 who have chronic or life threatening illnesses. The camp, located on 232 acres in Eustis, Fla, allows children whose lives have been a series of medical procedures and hospital stays to enjoy a camp experience as just a “kid.” Between early morning swims and evening campfires, children have a chance to be with others coping with the same illness or condition and realize that they are not alone. There is no charge to attend Camp Boggy Creek and it is solely supported by contributions. “The celebration of our 10th birthday gives us a chance to thank the thousands of donors and volunteers who have made this all possible and to invite those who haven’t been involved yet to come join us in this life changing work,” said June Clark, President of Camp Boggy Creek. Camp Boggy Creek serves children coping with pediatric cancer, hemophilia, arthritis, asthma, immunology disease, epilepsy, heart and kidney disease, transplants, sickle cell, rheumatic, diabetes, spina bifida and children on ventilators. In addition to 9 week-long summer camp sessions, Camp Boggy Creek hosts children and family members in the fall and spring during 20 weekend camp sessions. Camp Boggy Creek was co-founded by Paul Newman and General H. Norman Schwarzkopf and is one of Newman’s Hole In The Wall Camps. Newman sometimes surprises campers by showing up at his favorite water hole, (the lake) at Camp. “Whenever I’m in the dumps I come back here and it reaffirms everything that I think is really good and generous about this country” said Newman on a recent visit to Camp. “And to have some kid come up, who has been in the hospital for six months out of the year and say, ‘this place, to come back here is what I live for.’ “ Additional Information and the full camp 2006 schedule are available online at http://www.BoggyCreek.org or by calling Camp Boggy Creek at 866-Go-Boggy. |
