2004 World Sailfish Competition Reels In Big One For Florida’s Seriously Ill Children
Competitors in the Second Annual World Sailfish Championship (WSC) will be hoping to make a big catch for Florida’s seriously ill kids again this year. The WSC will be held April 13-17 in Key West, Fla., and will once again benefit Camp Boggy Creek.
Last year, the tournament raised $177,500 for Camp Boggy Creek, a year round camp for children ages 7-16 who have chronic or life threatening illnesses. The camp, located on 232 acres in Eustis, Fla, allows children whose lives have been a series of medical procedures and hospital stays to enjoy summer camp as just a “kid.” Between early morning swims and evening campfires, children have a chance to enjoy the summer camp experience with others coping with the same illness or condition and realize that they are not alone. There is no charge to attend camp. Camp Boggy Creek is solely supported by contributions and donations from individuals, corporations and foundations.
The WSC tournament is limited to the first 125 paid boat entries and will pay the winner $75,000 cash and an original Waterford Crystal trophy. Last year, Ray Rosher and the crew of Get Lit out of Miami, Fla., ultimately claimed the title of World Sailfish Champion, coming in first over the 92 teams who competed.
General H. Norman Schwarzkopf will return to serve as Honorary Chairman of the WSC. Schwarzkopf, who is a founding member of Camp Boggy Creek, will host a $500 a plate VIP dinner at Shula’s Steak House with all proceeds benefiting the charity on Wednesday, April 14. Seating is limited to the first 150 paid reservations. Anglers and new sponsors are encouraged to sign up early to participate in the WSC tournament April 13-17 in Key West, Fla.
