Camp Boggy Creek Receives “Gifts From the Heart” from Ireland Eustis, Fla. (Feb. 12, 2004) –Camp Boggy Creek, a camp for Florida’s seriously ill children located in Eustis, Fla., will receive a gift from the heart just in time for Valentine’s Day and its coming all the way from Ireland. Ten students from Ireland’s Inchicore University will volunteer as camp counselors for Spina Bifida Family Weekend Feb. 13-16 at Camp Boggy Creek. This is the third year that Camp Boggy Creek has benefited from the volunteer efforts of Inchicore students, who are pursuing education in the areas of sports and recreational therapy for children with disabilities. In addition to the student volunteers from Ireland, 14 medical students from Nova Southeaster University will volunteer their time and talents for the campers affected by spina bifida and their families. More than 120 children and family members will participate in this weekend’s Camp Boggy Creek event. Camp Boggy Creek serves over 3,500 of Florida’s chronically or seriously ill children and their family members each year through week-long summer camps and family weekends. Children ages 7-16 whose lives are affected by such diseases or illnesses as cancer, hemophilia, arthritis, asthma, heart disease, sickle cell, kidney disease, irritable bowel disease, spina bifida and epilepsy enjoy summer camp as just a “kid.” Between early morning swims and evening campfires, children have a chance to enjoy the summer camp experience with others coping with the same illness or condition and realize that they are not alone. There is no charge to attend camp. Camp Boggy Creek is solely supported by contributions and donations from individuals, corporations and foundations. More than 1,000 volunteers are needed each year at Camp Boggy Creek. If you are interested in learning more about volunteering, contact Robin Brubaker, Volunteer Coordinator, at (352) 483-4200, ext 293.
